We aim to strengthen the leadership and impact of advocacy in the field of international development in Japan, by bringing together players in the private sector such as NGOs, companies, the academia and media, and setting up regular opportunities to share information with members of parliament and the public. Through such efforts, we will widen the human, intellectual and financial contributions of Japan to the international community. In addition, we aim to improve the international presence of Japan through efforts to encourage the Japanese government to increase its funding for international development and to spend money effectively in areas, such as global health, that are expected to result in a greater impact on communities.
Project implementation period
May 2012 - the present
The main Japanese contribution to the field of international development is still the Official Developmental Assistance (ODA) provided by the Japanese government. However, the amount of ODA funding has halved since its peak in 1997, and Japan’s international presence in the field is diminishing. In addition, the efforts of NGOs and companies in the private sector are wide-ranging and lack focus, and there is currently no attempt to coordinate the activities of the public and private sectors. Furthermore, Japan’s media strategy and advocacy programs are still in their infancy, and a supportive environment to encourage human, intellectual and financial contributions in Japan still needs to be developed.
We set up a platform to facilitate regular meetings between individuals from the public and private sectors and the media. In these meetings, participants discuss the effectiveness of goals set by A4GI, amend them if necessary, and are encouraged to share information with the public and to ask for greater contributions from the government.
